Celebrating International Crochet Day…!!!

.

Today is International Crochet Day!!!  Wow… I think it should be a holiday,,, So we can gather to crochet!!!

intcro

.

So to celebrate,,, I would love to hear from all of you… Who taught you to crochet and how long have you been “Hooking”??  Here is my short story…

.

When I was 10 my grandmother Beatrice Sadie Ryan Ramshaw taught me to crochet… She bought a skein of my favorite color yarn for me to get started, Deep Purple!!!! My first project was a Granny Blanket… Just one big Granny Square!  I wish I still had that first project… But, What I do have are several of Beatrice’s Afghans, Doilies, and her love of crochet!  For the most part crochet was put in a box for many years, doing a small project once in a while until I reached my mid 20″s… Then the fire was lit… I have crocheted hundreds of projects and learned the true art of crochet… I hope you enjoy my love of crochet!

.

So, now you know why I call my website Beatrice Ryan Designs and my upcoming pattern “Sadie”(her middle name) a 1920’s style inspired hat pattern will be released soon in honor of my grandmother!

.

Now it’s your turn,,, Tell me your crochet story… Just leave a short comment so we can all celebrate together!

  1. I’d always wanted to learn and my step mother in law found out (she was TOTALLY shocked) and went and bought me hooks & yarn. I tried like mad to learn as much as I could before she left, and I was a total devotee before she left! I’ve become obessesed with granny squares, because then I’m never bored!

  2. Wonderful Story and such a touching tribute to your granny-now I understand TOTALLY the name of your business! 🙂 Here’s my story… When I was just a Little Girl…

I was blessed with two dear Grandmothers who were wonderfully gifted and loved all the arts of handcrafting. At their knee, a wee little blonde girl learned the fine art of crochet under their wise and talented tutelage. Now that little girl has grown up and enjoys a lifestyle that affords me the time to put hooks, yummy yarns and fibers back into my hands, returning to the joy and fun of the art of handcrafted crochet. I am awed by the talent and creative patterns of modern new designers, but still enjoy the beauty of vintage patterns as well. My hands are never idle, handcrafting stylishly beautiful, practical, cozy, comfy, sweet and cute wearables and loveables for old and young alike. As a very detail oriented artist, I crochet with love, embracing the virtues bequested to me by those two beautiful Grandmothers. I know you will find my handcrafted items impeccably created to treasure now and weather the test of time.

  3. A crochet holiday? Yeah!!!! I am so in….

My crafting story started with my grandmother 2 pencils and some elastics! I would often spent nights over and her house and she would knit most times. I remember those times fondly. One day while she was knitting I can remember watching her intently and went to the drawer that had the selection if misc items. Picked out 2 pencils and an elastic and promptly sat down beside her trying to mimic her hand movements. She asked me if I wanted to learn and so my crafting experience started. I treasure that memory a lot and hope to one day share my passion with my little butterfly.

Thanks for asking and have a great day!

  4. I learned from my 7th grade enrichment teacher and never looked back. I wonder if she realized what she was really teaching me? It’s such a gift that I will always keep in my heart.

I love your story and what a tribute to a woman that loved and adored you! I know she’s so proud of you!

  5. I just learned how to crochet in January. I’ve always been intrigued by crocheting though; as my mother loves it.

  6. When I was younger, my family gathered at my grandmother’s house most Sundays. I had lots of cousins! When we were around 10, my granny sat us all down and taught us how to make a chain. But since ai was the only “lefty”, I couldn’t seem to get any further with her teachings. And I pursued other crafts.
When I was about 35 (time flies!), I became determined to master the only craft that had eluded me! With the help of left-handed tutorials on YouTube I quickly became addicted! LOL This craft has helped me through hard times in the last few years. A lot of hospital waiting rooms with my Dad have been turned into classrooms when people can approach me and my yarn! It is my passion!

  7. hi, I learnt to crochet just over a year ago. I was staying with my mum and a friend popped in to see us – Joanne – we got chatting and she showed me how to make a chain and do double crochet. so grateful for her patience and clear instructions. Just finished my first granny square blanket- all thanks to Joanne passing on a crafty skill.

  8. Thanks so much for following my blog! I moved “house” to http://www.monsteryarns.co.uk/myblog/
Hope you have time to come and visit : )
